How is Agenda 2030 connected to YesWeAre and schools?

What are the Global Goals?

On September 25, 2015, the member states of the United Nations adopted Agenda 2030, a
universal agenda for sustainable development that includes seventeen global goals to be
achieved by the year 2030. The Global Goals are further supported by 169 targets and more
than 230 global indicators that outline how the work is to be carried out and monitored.
The Global Goals and Agenda 2030 represent the most ambitious agreement for sustainable
development ever adopted by the world’s leaders. The concept of sustainable development
integrates the three dimensions of sustainability: social, economic, and environmental.
Through the Global Goals, the world’s leaders have committed to achieving four remarkable
things by 2030:

  • To eradicate extreme poverty.
  • To reduce inequalities and injustices around the world.
  • To promote peace and justice.
  • To solve the climate crisis.

YesWeAre, the Curriculums (Lgr22 and CBE17), and the Global Goals

Here, we have summarized and aligned the Swedish Curriculum (Lgr22) and the Kenyan
curriculum (Competency-Based Curriculum, CBE) with the Global Goals and the work carried
out by YesWeAre.

Education for Democratic Values and Human Rights
The education systems aims to develop knowledge and values, including respect for human
rights and democracy. Students are to be nurtured into responsible citizens. This aligns
directly with YesWeAre’s work in educating children and youth in reflection, responsibility,
and civic engagement. This is in line with the global goals:

Goal 4 – Quality Education for All

Target 4.7 – Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship

YesWeAre focuses on education in
sustainable development and human rights.

Goal 16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

Target 16.5 – Substantially reduce corruption and bribery in all their forms

Target 16.7 – Ensure responsive, inclusive, participatory and representative decision-making at all levels

YesWeAre promotes inclusion and participation in decision-making processes. YesWeAre also works on anti-corruption.

Goal 1 – No Poverty

Target 1.1 – Extreme poverty should be eradicated for all people
everywhere

When YesWeAre’s initiatives influence a country, corruption is reduced, which in turn helps decrease poverty.

Work Against Discrimination and Abusive Treatment
Schools should actively work to prevent discrimination and abusive behavior, as well as to
stop intolerance and oppression. YesWeAre’s work on reflecting on mind sets and behaviors,
helps reduce discrimination and promote tolerance. This is in line with the global goals:

Goal 5 – Gender Equality

Target 5.1 – End all forms of discrimination against all women and girls everywhere

YesWeAre works to eliminate discrimination.

Goal 10 – Reduced Inequalities

Target 10.2 – Empower and promote the social, economic and political inclusion of all

YesWeAre works to promote inclusion.

Promoting Empathy and Responsibility for Others
The goal of schools is for students to understand other people’s situations and act with their
best interests in mind. This aligns with the organization’s work in promoting empathy and
reflection on the consequences of actions. This is in line with the global goals:

Goal 16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

Target 16.1 – Significantly reduce all forms of violence and related death rates everywhere

YesWeAre works to reduce violence by promoting peace and understanding.

Participation and Democratic Responsibility
Students should have the opportunity to voice their opinions and influence their own learning.
They should also be guided in taking responsibility within the framework of democratic
principles. YesWeAre’s work with youth clubs and community engagement provides a
concrete example of this goal in action. This is in line with the global goals:

Goal 16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

Target 16.7 – Ensure responsive, inclusive, participatory and representative decision-making at all levels

YesWeAre works to promote inclusive decision-making.

Sustainable Development and an International Perspective
Teaching should highlight sustainable development and an international perspective in order
to promote global solidarity. YesWeAre’s work as a global youth movement strengthens
understanding of global connections and sustainability. This is in line with the global goals:

Goal 4 – Quality Education for All

Target 4.7 – Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship

YesWeAre works to promote sustainable development and international understanding.

Goal 17 – Partnerships for the Goals

Target 17.16 – Enhance the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development

YesWeAre works to strengthen global partnership

Values and Norms in the Age of Digitalisation
Schools should use digitalisation as a tool for learning. The Swedish curriculum also
emphasizes that schools should address both the opportunities and the risks of increased
digitalisation. YesWeAre’s work can help young people develop the skills to navigate digital
platforms effectively, enabling them to combat disinformation and corruption. This is in line with the global goals:

Goal 16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions

Target 16.10 – Ensure public access to information and protect fundamental freedoms

YesWeAre works to ensure access to information and protect fundamental freedoms.

Care for Health and Well-Being
The Swedish curriculum (LGR22) states that schools should promote personal security, self-
confidence, and care for health and development. The aims and structure of Kenya’s CBE
clearly support this as part of holistic learner development. By focusing on reflection and positive change, YesWeAre indirectly supports mental well-being. This is in line with the global goals:

Goal 3 – Good Health and Well-Being

Target 3.4 – Reduce mortality from non-communicable diseases and promote mental health

Work with YesWeAre can promote mental health.
